"Petra Fortress" - The Historical Significance of the Monument
Petra Fortress is an ancient fortress-city located in Tsikhisdziri, Adjara. Built in 535 AD by Strategos Ioane, the name "Petra" is the Byzantine name of this fortress-city, while it is known as "Kajeti Fortress" in Georgian. It is believed that this fortress is mentioned in the Georgian epic poem The Knight in the Panther's Skin.
The fortress-city is located on the Black Sea coast, 440 meters above sea level. Petra was strategically built on a coastal, rocky hill, with its steep cliffs and fortified walls offering protection from the mainland side. It was considered an impregnable fortress, and its ruins are still preserved to this day.
The archaeological complex includes a citadel, outer city, and residential remains. Within the citadel, remnants of a palace, ancient baths, storage facilities, soldiers’ quarters, and the foundation of a 6th-7th century basilica, once the Petra episcopal cathedral, can still be seen.
